If you’ve been around Des Moines First recently you can tell there’s “something in the air.”  It’s NOT a flu bug, its growing, contagious excitement over our upcoming  SKY Vacation Bible School! You’ll be hearing a LOT about it in the weeks ahead, and one of the most exciting aspects is our common desire to reach out to the spiritual needs of our community. This effort has been conceived in prayer, nurtured through diligent planning, and now brought forth to our whole body.  So how will you “catch” the VBS spirit?

• Will you pray?
• Will you volunteer? (more about that in the link below)
• Will you register your children?
• Will you encourage your children to register their friends? (deadlines & info in the link below)

I believe we’ll all find this to be an incredible week packed with ministry and memorable impact in the hearts of kids. I hope and pray for your involvement.

Perhaps you are familiar with “The Five Languages of Love” by Gary Chapman? Simply put he defines five ways that people give and receive love.

In no certain order, they are:
Words of Affirmation
Gift Giving
Acts of Service
Physical Touch
Quality Time

Most people identify most strongly with one of these languages.  The simplest test is to say “What makes me feel most loved?”  or “How do I show love?”  That brings up the question;  ”What is God’s love language?”  So here goes.

Does God show His love with Words of Affirmation? How about “I will never leave you or forsake you;” or “I hold you in the palm of my hand.” or “Love one another as I have loved you;” and perhaps the entire Word of God.

Gift Giving? We could start with His gift of Creation, and life itself, food, shelter, the last breath I took…etc.   These gifts are given by Him, but how often do we acknowledge the source?

What Acts of Service has God done to show His love?  Apart from providing and sustaining life, I’d say His death on the cross for our sins would qualify as an act of service.  Need we go further? “Greater love has no man than this; that he lay down his life for his friend.”

Physical Touch?  When God came to earth “with flesh on” He most certainly expressed love by physical touch.  We don’t know for sure if He was a “hugger,” but he touched the blind, and the leper, and picked up a child or two.   His presence and “touch” by the Holy Spirit is a sure reality too.

Finally how does God show His love with Quality Time?  Perhaps a better question would ask when doesn’t the Lord want to be with us?  If we understood His omniscience we would realize that every moment of every day can be quality time in His presence.

Let us rejoice in our God who loves each one of us and speaks our language of love every day.

Those of us who have ventured into the arena of parenting realize the many trials, traumas, and hopefully triumphs of this time-honored contest. We also realize that help, and advice, and encouragement are vital ingredients to keep us in the fight. One important goal for our kids is to know all the books of the Bible in order. Using a tool called THE BIBLE MOVES we teach that order PLUS a content related hand motion. “Sequence + Content = A Lifelong tool for Learning” Oh yes, one more important ingredient; FUN! Begin with about a dozen enthusiastic boys, half a dozen leaders, tents, bedrolls, and enough food for 24 hours.

Take them to a scenic location and set up camp while attempting to keep the boys out of the pond.

Proceed to the Drake observatory to…observe. (what else?) Sing loud and obnoxious songs all the way back to camp, and consume sugary drinks and snack.

Attempt to go to bed.

Morning will be greeted by chilly temps, fog off the water, and a colorful sunrise.

Scrambled eggs in a bag for breakfast, followed by a morning filled with fishing, clam shells, mud, archery, and general mayhem.

Lunch hot dogs will disappear with astounding speed, followed by fresh-picked apples from the nearby orchard.

Tents are packed, utensils washed and dried, clothing stuffed, and everything piled into the bus for the trip back to church. (more loud and rowdy singing).

That’s what fun IS! REALLY!!
