2011 New International Version? Read this before your opinion hardens against it.

bibleIt is ALWAYS a good recommendation to read the Bible, of course, but which version? How about the 2011 edition of The NIV (New International Version)?  As usual with any new translation there are opinions which get voiced around to and fro. Before long those ideas get repeated and repeated and soon the thoughts become hardened in our minds without our own study or research. How many of us have really studied the translation and made a decision based on reason, and thought, and scholarship?

Here’s a good spot to begin.  These are notes from the Committee on Bible Translation that address all the issues that might worry people.

Please read this article, or talk to someone who has, and make your own decision to embrace or reject the latest version. I have read the article, compared the versions, and formed my own opinion. (I am not going to reveal my opinion yet, but I will look forward to discussing the issue after you have made your own study.)

The next site allows you to look at the 1984 NIV/tNIV/2011 NIV side by side.  Simply select a chapter from any book of the bible from the search bar near the top of the web page.

I think you’ll find the link to Bible Gateway very interesting as it basically gives the rationale for this new version and reiterates the initial reasoning behind the effort to create the NIV translation.
