Our dialog continues about the NIV update

In the midst of our conversation, I’m unsure how to even quote scripture….so here is what we call 2 Timothy 2:15;paul-letter-writer1

“σπούδασον σεαυτὸν δόκιμον παραστῆσαι τῷ Θεῷ, ἐργάτην ἀνεπαίσχυντον, ὀρθοτομοῦντα τὸν λόγον τῆς ἀληθείας. “

Clear enough?  It’s “Greek to me” and is the bonafide original.  Let’s dial that in more closely for those of us who (like me) who are NOT Greek scholars, here presented in chronological order according to publication date.

  • (KJV 1611)  Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
  • (NIV 1984) Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.
  • (ESV 2001)  Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
  • (NIV 2011) Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.

All that to encourage our practice of the verse.  I am encouraged that many of us are diligently studying to determine what is right, and how to proceed.

SO FAR in the dialog we have raised substantive questions about the 2011 NIV and the decision of the Assemblies of God to adopt that version.  We are now in the process of studying those changes with all the marvelous technology we have available to us.  (Wouldn’t the apostles be amazed?)  This is NOT just the pastors, but many of our families, diving into the scriptures comparing, talking, discussing.  That is SUCH a good thing! Let’s keep that conversation going!

We are also in the process of inquiry into the reasoning behind the changes. Our legitimate concerns and questions will be properly sent up the line to those who have knowledge about the decisions and  influence within the fellowship.  We will hope to post replies to our concerns as we get them.

In the meantime, please continue to pray for grace & insight, for unity and compassion as we walk forward together.

BTW, the Bible Study program I recommend which has been such a helpful tool in this process, is E-Sword.  check it out here;  http://www.e-sword.net/index.html

Studiously yours,

BBopp

Thank you for the open dialogue about the change…hard for many, but you are so right – if we didn’t want to change we should all still be reading Greek.
